Kathakali
This popular as the art form of Kerala has been referred to as 'the first theater of imagination' of the world owing to its elaborate costumes, ornaments and facial make-up. It is presented in the temple precincts after dusk falls. Kathakali is heralded by the Kelikottu or the beating of drums in accompaniment of the Chengila (gong). The art form is a happy blend of colour, expressions, music, drama and dance is unparalleled in any other art form.
Mohiniyattam
The sinuous dance of the enchantress, this is a distinctive classical dance form of Kerala. The movements of the dancer have been compared to the palms swaying in the gentle breeze and the sweeping waves which are so much a part of Kerala's lush landscape. The slow, graceful, swaying movements of the body and limbs and highly emotive eye and hand gestures are unique to this dance form.
Thullal
A classical art form performed in solo combining the dance and recitation of stories in verse. Ottanthullal, Parayanthullal and Seethanganthullal are the three different forms of Thullal. It is staged during temple festivals, the performer explicates the verses through expressive gestures. The themes are based on mythology.
Kalaripayattu
The oldest existing martial art form, dating back more than 2000 years. It is also regarded as the oldest and most scientific in the world. Training in combat is given at the kalari (training school). Kalaripayattu training aims at the ultimate co-ordination of the mind and body.
